Sunflowers have been a theme this month and I wrote a poem about it.
Sunflowers in the basement
into the dark
i peer into the well
the steps below
i cannot see
only feel
by step
slowly i descend
unsure
afraid
i think I know what’s down here
it’s that thought that fills me with fear
what if I’m wrong?
what if I’m disappointed by what’s actually down here?
too late
i’ve descended
i search for the string
you know the one that’s attached to the
bulb
hanging from the ceiling
i grasp it and tug
i gasp
thousands of sunflowers
fully bloomed
brighter than the single lightbulb
the sunflowers fill the basement
and my heart with warmth
